Makybe Diva was first conceived in Ireland but born in England. After not being sold at auction, her owner, Tony Santic, put her on board a ship to bring her home to Australia, to his home town of Port Lincoln, South Australia.
She has had a very chequered racing career with various wins, places and losses before her unbeatable winning streak began.
Makybe Diva became a very famous horse after she created history in 2005 by winning the Melbourne Cup three years in a row. She is shown winning the 2005 Melbourne Cup below. Glen Boss was the lucky jockey for all three races and that probably had a lot to do with it.
David Hall started out as the mare’s trainer, but in early 2003 he moved overseas to Hong Kong. Lee Freedman took over and that was obviously a stroke of good luck. Lee Freedman was Makybe Diva’s trainer and obviously also had a great deal of influence over the success of the mare. This magnificent animal also won an Australian Cup, a Sydney Cup and the BMW in Sydney’s Rosehill Gardens.
In July of 2006, this horse, which became one of the greats of the racing circuit, was inducted into the Australian Racing Museum and Hall of Fame. In October of the same year, in the owner’s home town of Port Lincoln South Australia, a bronze statue of her was erected. Tony Santic couldn’t be prouder of her beautiful mare and the success she has had in racing.
Only five horses, including Makybe Diva, have won the Melbourne Cup more than once since it began in 1861 and is the only mare to have done so. When Makybe was retired in November 2005, she was the highest stakes-earner in the history of Australian horse racing with earnings in excess of $14.4 million. This amount has never been beaten so far.
Tony Santic named his magnificent horse after five of his tuna boat employees, using the first two letters of each of their names. They were Maureen, Kylie, Belinda, Diane, and Vanessa. They were also obviously very proud of the horse’s achievements during her racing career.
Makybe Diva won the Sydney Cup between her first and second Melbourne Cup wins. She’s only the second horse to have won both the Melbourne Cup and Sydney Cup in the same year. Only Carbine did the same thing back in 1890.
Makybe Diva won the title of Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year in August 2005. She also won the titles of Champion Stayer 2.2 kms and Most Popular Racehorse.
In October of the same year, Makybe Diva broke another record by winning the Cox Plate and was the first horse to have won this race along with two Melbourne Cup races. Several weeks later she won her third Melbourne Cup title to break yet another record.
Makybe Diva is one of the only horses to eclipse the major success of legendary Phar Lap which is an incredible achievement for any horse. Makybe Diva is the only mare to have broken so many records.
