Asian Handicaps in Football Explained

Understand whole, half and quarter-goal handicaps, including pushes, half-wins and half-losses, through straightforward examples.

In simple terms: an Asian handicap gives one football team a virtual head start and the other a virtual disadvantage. The adjusted score determines whether the bet wins, loses or is refunded.

With a standard match-result bet, you normally choose between the home team, the draw and the away team. An Asian handicap market usually offers only two selections. The handicap is designed to make an uneven match more balanced from a betting perspective.

Depending on the line selected, an Asian handicap bet can produce a full win, full loss, refund, half-win or half-loss.

A simple Asian handicap example

Imagine Manchester City are playing Everton. City are strong favourites, so the bookmaker offers:

Example Asian handicap market 90 minutes
Manchester City
-1.0
vs
Everton
+1.0

If you place a £10 bet on Manchester City -1.0, City effectively begin one goal behind for settlement purposes.

3–1

City win by two goals

The adjusted score becomes 2–1. The bet wins.

Full win
2–1

City win by one goal

The adjusted score becomes 1–1. Your stake is refunded.

Push / refund
1–1

The match is drawn

The adjusted score becomes 0–1. The bet loses.

Full loss
0–1

City lose

The handicap makes no difference to the outcome. The bet loses.

Full loss

Backing the underdog

You could instead back Everton +1.0. Everton receive a virtual one-goal advantage.

Whole-goal Asian handicaps

Whole-goal handicaps include lines such as 0, -1.0, +1.0, -2.0 and +2.0. These are the lines that can produce a refunded bet, often called a push.

Asian handicap 0

A handicap of 0 is effectively Draw No Bet. Backing Liverpool 0 means the bet wins if Liverpool win, is refunded if the match is drawn, and loses if Liverpool lose.

Half-goal Asian handicaps

Half-goal lines include -0.5, +0.5, -1.5 and +1.5. Because a football match cannot finish with half a goal, these bets cannot result in a refund.

-0.5

Favourite -0.5

The selected team must win. A draw or defeat means the bet loses.

+0.5

Underdog +0.5

The selected team may win or draw. It only loses if defeated.

-1.5

Favourite -1.5

The team must win by at least two goals.

+1.5

Underdog +1.5

The team can lose by one goal and the bet still wins.

Quarter-goal Asian handicaps

Quarter-goal lines divide your stake equally between two neighbouring handicaps. This is why they can result in half-wins and half-losses.

A £10 bet on a quarter-goal handicap is settled as two separate £5 bets.

How -0.25 works

A £10 bet on Tottenham -0.25 is divided into £5 on Tottenham 0 and £5 on Tottenham -0.5.

A draw therefore creates a half-loss.

How +0.25 works

A £10 bet on Brentford +0.25 is divided into £5 on Brentford 0 and £5 on Brentford +0.5.

A draw therefore creates a half-win.

How -0.75 works

A £10 bet on Newcastle -0.75 is divided into £5 on Newcastle -0.5 and £5 on Newcastle -1.0.

A one-goal victory creates a half-win.

How +0.75 works

A £10 bet on Wolves +0.75 is divided into £5 on Wolves +0.5 and £5 on Wolves +1.0.

A one-goal defeat creates a half-loss.

Calculating your returns

Suppose you place £10 on Manchester City -1.0 at decimal odds of 1.90.

£10 × 1.90 = £19 total return

If City win by two or more goals, the £19 return consists of your £10 stake plus £9 profit. If City win by exactly one goal, your £10 stake is refunded. If City draw or lose, the bet loses.

Half-win example

You bet £10 on Newcastle -0.75 at odds of 2.00 and Newcastle win by exactly one goal.

£10 winning return + £5 refund = £15 total return

Your profit is £5.

Half-loss example

You bet £10 on Wolves +0.75 and Wolves lose by exactly one goal. The £5 on +0.5 loses, while the £5 on +1.0 is refunded. You receive £5 back and lose £5.

Does extra time count?

Football Asian handicap bets are normally settled using the score after 90 minutes plus added time. Extra time and penalty shoot-outs generally do not count unless the market rules state otherwise.

Why bettors use Asian handicaps

Key points to remember

  • A negative handicap is normally applied to the favourite.
  • A positive handicap is normally applied to the underdog.
  • Whole-goal lines can result in a refund.
  • Half-goal lines either win or lose.
  • Quarter-goal lines can produce half-wins and half-losses.

Frequently asked questions

Is Asian handicap 0 the same as Draw No Bet?

Yes. Your selection wins if the team wins, your stake is refunded if the match is drawn, and the bet loses if the team is beaten.

What does a push mean?

A push occurs when the adjusted score is level on a whole-goal handicap. The stake is returned and there is no profit or loss.

Why is a -0.75 bet split in two?

It represents half your stake on -0.5 and half on -1.0. This creates the possibility of a half-win when the selected team wins by exactly one goal.

Do Asian handicaps include extra time?

Normally no. Most markets are settled after 90 minutes plus stoppage time, but you should always check the bookmaker's individual rules.

Responsible gambling

Betting should be treated as entertainment, not a way to make guaranteed income. Never stake money you cannot afford to lose and take regular breaks from gambling.
