Epsom 5 Furlongs
The 5 Furlong course at Epsom is the fastest 5 Furlongs in the world, and looking at the diagram above you can see why as it is steeply downhill all the way.
Epsom 12 Furlongs (The Derby course and distance)
The Derby course is shown in the above diagram and you can see that it is quite a unique test in that the first half of the race is uphill, the first part being steeply uphill, the last 4 furlongs is then quite steeply downhill. It takes a certain type of horse.
