HOW TO USE THIS TOOL

Type two MLB team names into the boxes below (start typing and pick from the suggestions), choose which one is the home team, and press Calculate true odds.

You'll get each team's estimated chance of winning, the "fair" decimal odds and moneyline that chance implies, and their past head-to-head results this season and last.

If you've got odds from a sportsbook for the same game, pop them into the two boxes at the bottom of the results to see whether the price looks generous or stingy compared to this model.

The leaderboard further down shows current Elo ratings for all 30 teams, based on results through 20261004.

Adding starters layers a pitching-matchup adjustment on top of team Elo, based on each pitcher's rolling runs-allowed rate (not simple win/loss — see footer for why). Leave blank to treat a side as an average starter.

Model: team Elo (K=10, home-field advantage=+24 pts, initial rating 1500). Between seasons, each team’s rating is pulled 33% of the way back toward neutral to reflect roster turnover, so this season’s results carry more weight than prior seasons’ — the same idea FiveThirtyEight uses in its own sports Elo models. On top of team Elo sits an optional pitching-matchup layer. Each starter gets a rolling runs-allowed-per-9 rating (exponential average, weight 0.12 per start, seeded at the league average of 4.53, each start’s RA9 capped at 15 so one disastrous short outing can’t swamp the average). A selected starter’s deviation from league average is scaled by an assumed 60% share of the game’s runs-allowed, run through a Pythagorean win-expectancy formula against the league-average team scoring rate (4.51 runs/game), and converted to Elo-equivalent points. This intentionally uses runs allowed, not win/loss — win-credit pitcher stats are a known weak proxy for quality since they’re contaminated by bullpen, offense and defense. Still a simplification: no adjustment for park, opponent quality, or pitch-count/fatigue. Ratings reflect results through 20261004. Not betting advice.
