SANDOWN RACECOURSE


Sandown Racecourse is set in the middle of Esher and the traffic can be horrendous but once you get in the course is excellent. They host both Flat and Jumps racing at Sandown.

Key Characteristics

Sandown is very much a galloping course with the four furlong run-in being up a steep hill, and therefore you need horses that fully stay the distance to win at Sandown. Sandown also has a completely separate straight 5 furlong course in the centre of the track, this is uphill all the way and certainly takes some getting. There is often a distinct draw bias on the 5 furlong course, see pages right for details.

Interesting Facts about Sandown Park Racecourse

  • Sandown Park opened in 1875 and was one of the first purpose-built racecourses in Britain.
  • It was among the earliest racecourses to charge all spectators an admission fee.
  • Sandown stages both Flat and National Hunt racing.
  • The Eclipse Stakes, first run in 1886, is one of Sandown’s best-known Flat races.
  • The Tingle Creek Chase is one of the leading two-mile steeplechases in the British jumping calendar.
  • The racecourse is located in Esher, Surrey, around 15 miles south-west of central London.
  • Sandown’s grandstand overlooks both the main circuit and the separate straight five-furlong course.
  • The venue is operated by The Jockey Club.
