SOUTHWELL RACECOURSE


Southwell Racecourse is set in the East Midlands countryside, and hosts both jump and flat action with the flat action being both turf and all weather. It's certainly not posh but the viewing is great and is a must for real racing fans.

Key Characteristics

Southwell has now changed it's surface from Fibresand to Tapeta with the first meeting on this new surface being held on 7th December 2021.

The course used to favour prominent horses when it was fibresand, it will take a little while for the new Tapeta surface to settle down and for us to draw any conclusions with regard to track biases.

Interesting Facts about Southwell Racecourse

  • Southwell stages both Flat and National Hunt racing.
  • The racecourse is located near the village of Rolleston in Nottinghamshire.
  • Southwell became one of Britain’s early all-weather racing venues in the late 1980s.
  • For many years, Southwell was the only British racecourse to use a Fibresand surface.
  • The Fibresand track was replaced by a Tapeta surface in 2021.
  • The first meeting on the new Tapeta track was held in December 2021.
  • Southwell’s all-weather course is left-handed and approximately a mile and a quarter in circumference.
  • The venue’s National Hunt course is separate from the all-weather circuit.
  • Southwell Racecourse is operated by Arena Racing Company.
  • Its all-weather programme allows Flat racing to take place throughout the year.
